Transporting loads that are too big for the vehicle needs careful planning and following state-specific rules. In North Dakota, getting the right oversize permits is important to make sure that your loads are transported legally and without any problems. We at IRP Trucks, IFTA, FMSCA, ICC, UCR Illinois IRP Agency (call 630-847-0241) are experts at giving out all types of large trucking permits, such as yearly, fuel trip, overweight, overheight, overlength, and overwidth permits.
Knowing North Dakota Oversize Permits
North Dakota oversize permits are essential for transporting loads that exceed standard legal dimensions. You must get one of these permits before entering the state; they are valid for three days. These permits can be used from sunrise to sunset, every day, even on Saturdays and Sundays. But loads that are more than 16 feet wide and 110 feet long can’t go anywhere after noon on Saturdays or all day on Sundays. Overweight loads can move continuously, but it’s best to check with the permit office again, especially during holidays when limits may apply.
Dimensions and limits set by the law
– Length: 53 feet for semi-trailers and loads; 75 feet total, including loads and any rear overhang.”
– 8’6″ width – 14′
heightWeight: 80,000 lbs gross
– Single Axle: 20,000 lbs
– Tandem Axle: 34,000 lbs
– Triple Axle: 48,000 lbs.
Tractors must be registered at the maximum of 105,500 pounds to be permitted for that much or more. It is allowed to carry more than 80,000 pounds gross on state roads without a permit as long as you have a permit for the gross weight and all axle/group weights. On the other hand, you need a “Interstate Permit” for routes that go between states.
Limits on Regular Permits
– Length: 120′ – Width: 18′ – Height: 18′ – Weight: – Steer: 12,100 lbs for 11″ tires (550 lbs per inch of tire width)
– Single: 24,000 lbs.Tandem: 45,000 lbs
– Tridem: 60,000 lbs
– Quad: 68,000 lbs.
If your load is bigger or heavier than these limits, it is called a “superload,” and you may need to get extra rights for it.
Escort Requirements
– Length: Over 120′ – 1 escort.
– Width on 2-lane highways: – Over 14’6″ up to 16′ – 1 escort or lighted rotating/flashing amber lights.
– Must be over 16; 2 guards.
– Width on 4-lane highways: – Over 16′ – 1 escort.
Over 18s: Official protection (unless the Highway Patrol says otherwise).
• If you are over 18 feet tall, you need a guard and signed permission from energy companies.
Seasonal Load (Weight) Restrictions
On non-Interstate roads, spring thaw load weight limits begin in February and can last until May or long. On each axle, these limits can be anywhere from the allowed weight to 6 to 8 tons. Ton-mile exceptions are sometimes possible, but they can cost a lot.
Signs, Flags & Lights
On the back of trucks longer than 75 feet, you must have a “Oversize Load” sign. All loads that are too big must have flags on the front, back, and side facing traffic. Overwidth and overheight loads only need flags, not signs.
